The definitive tribute to a watchmaker’s love affair with motor racing, the Cosmograph Daytona is an iconic slice of Rolex history. In 1988, Rolex updated early iterations with the introduction of a new, self-winding movement and size increase from 37mm to 40mm. The subsequent reference 116520, launched at Baselworld in 2000, represented Rolex’s first new in-house movement for 50 years, in the form of the Calibre 4130 self-winding chronograph. Also notable was the updated vertical clutch mechanism, delivering an unprecedented level of stop-start timing precision. Cosmographs – particularly those featuring the modern ceramic bezel - have enjoyed increasing market value for decades, making them an ideal vintage watch investment for 2020 and beyond.

Interestingly, Rolex marketed the Royal as being ideally suited for those in the medical profession, this assertion being made on the basis that a large second hand would be far easier to consult when timing a patient’s heartbeat over a sixty second period.

The conception of the Datejust Oysterquartz dates to the beginning of the 1970s, the design of the watch is far removed from the classic Rolex line and carved characteristics of the period: a completely angular case, an integrated band with a polished finish and sapphire glass. Regarding the materials used to make this watch, the whole range consisted of three versions: gold, steel with white gold bezel and steel and yellow gold. At the start, the Datejust Oysterquartz was somewhat overlooked in Europe; however, it was much sought-after in the Asian and American markets. A renewed interest in the watch was sparked when Rolex decided to take the Oysterquartz out of its catalogue and thus out of production. The era of the Rolex quartz watch ended in 2001, having lasted less than three decades. The Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz began to appear in the most important auctions houses’ catalogues, becoming a highly valued object in the collectors’ market. View page
