Rolex's first chronograph automatic was used roughly from 1988-2001. They did not have their own in-house movement so they used the best automatic movement on the market at the time - the Zenith EL Primero.
Through the 90's Rolex created their own movement released in the 116520 model.
This new movement was acclaimed a great success and instantly started selling over the retail price from 2001 on-wards.
Keeping with tradition, when they brought out the latest ceramic watches in 2017, the premium escalated even more.
Holding a Steel Daytona is as safer bet as you can get.
