The battle is heating up at the Royal Berkshire Shooting School’s (RBSS) annual shooting competition, with finalists set to fight it out for the biggest prizes in clay pigeon shooting on 16 February.

Now in its third year, the prestigious competition has evolved from the Ultimate One into the Ultimate Pair – with one lucky shooter set to win a coveted vintage steel Rolex GMT II automatic steel bracelet watch worth more than £5,000, courtesy of David Duggan Watches.

Between October and January, almost 600 took part in the qualifying rounds, shooting at a new sequence of 25 driven birds off of the RBSS’s legendary 120-foot tower. Each competitor is allowed 50 warm-up birds before making two attempts at the Ultimate Pair challenge. The 20 highest-scoring individuals on the tower alone go through to the final, where, if the overall winner shoots 23 or more of the 25 birds they will win either a luxury Range Rover or a pair of Browning shotguns. Meanwhile, the entrant scoring the highest out of 100 (including the 50 warm-up birds) each week during the qualifiers has been invited to the final to shoot off for our vintage Rolex.

This year’s final is likely to be fierce, after Mark Winser stunned everyone at the 2015 Ultimate One final with a perfect 25/25, six ahead of second-placed Will Thatcher, who scored 19.

We’re proud to have supported the competition since its inception and this year we’ve chosen a real ‘James Bond’ of a sports watch. The Rolex has a screw-down crown, is waterproof, rugged and hardwearing – perfect for anyone who loves their active pursuits, clay pigeon shooting included. It’s more unusual than some of the modern sports Rolexes and its value is only set to rise. Our very own David Hagan will be at the finals – set to take place in the RBSS’s beautiful Pangbourne grounds – on 16 February to present the watch to the ultimate winner
