The beginning of 2014 saw the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) open its doors once again to the latest fine timepiece trends and innovations – and this year was not one to disappoint. So naturally, as specialists in the luxury watch market, our team at David Duggan are keen to bring you some tempting glimpses of what high end horology will have to offer in the years to come. Here are just some examples of today’s innovations that have been tipped to become tomorrow’s classics:

Vacheron Constantin:

This master maker’s original Malte Tourbillon (launched in 2012) takes on new life as it joins the Excellence Platine collection in a limited edition platinum form. As if the 169-part mechanical hand-wound Calibre 2795, alligator strap with silk and 950 platinum thread and “berçage” finish weren’t enough, Vacheron Constantin has upped the luxury stakes with a second Haute Joaillerie model – fully set with serti-visible diamonds. With only 50 available worldwide, this is undoubtedly a collection that says “connoisseur” through and through.

Jaeger LeCoultre:

Championed by its maker as the first ever world-time model with a to-the-minute second time zone, LeCoultre’s Duomètre Unique Travel Time is the serial traveller’s dream. Its Caliber 383 movement is divided into two independently powered mechanisms so that neither time zone ever loses its accuracy – known as the “Dual-Wing” concept. The addition of a beautifully finished global time zone indicator and crystal case back gives this timepiece superiority in the aesthetic stakes, as well as guaranteeing accurate dual-zone timekeeping.

The French princes of watchmaking have surprised the market this year with a long awaited return to specialist sports watches, in the form of the Calibre de Cartier collection. Striking design, strict adherence to ISO 6245 standards and all the power of Cartier’s new 1904 MC movement combine to make this collection a market newcomer tipped (quite rightly) by the maker as “a combination of sporting masculinity and exceptional expertise”.

These are just some of the examples of new aspirational and inspirational pieces hitting the luxury watch market.
