Tips for Buying a Luxury Used Watch

At David Duggan Watches we have built up a reputation over the past twenty years for quality and expertise. We are recognised as one of the leading fine watch dealers in the UK and as such, we have put together the guidelines below to bear in mind when you are considering buying a pre-owned luxury timepiece.

Buying a used luxury watch is a significant investment and taking the time to do your research beforehand is paramount.

Consider the different brands and models available when you start your research, think about your reasons for the purchase and what you want your luxury second hand watch to say about you.

Different vintage watches have a variety of features and idiosyncrasies. When you’re choosing your model, ensure it has everything you require. Narrow down your selection by doing thorough research beforehand.

Source a good watch dealer who can help you find your perfect luxury watch. In the UK, the primary indicator of the level of specialism and expertise a watch dealer possesses is if they have earned membership into the British Horological Institute. To become a member everything from workshops to technicians, administration and repair processes are stringently assessed so you can be confident you will receive the very best service.

When you’ve completed your research and you’re ready to buy a used watch, make sure it is genuine by looking for a serial number engraved on the watch, an authentic time piece should also have this written in full on the invoice.

Always check what guarantee you will receive when you purchase a used luxury watch, the vast majority of watch dealers won’t offer less than a year’s guarantee.

At David Duggan we offer a 12 month guarantee as our Technician, Ian Forster, is Patek Philippe trained and one of the best watch repairers in the UK.

A major source for buying watches at David Duggan is from existing clients. Fine pruning one’s collection is a constant joy for a collector and the staff at David Duggan are always keen to take back watches they have previously sold to help in any part-exchange deal against another watch.
